Lumpkin’s Jail Memorial
Project Location: Richmond, VA
Client: City of Richmond
Architect: Smith Group
In collaboration with the SmithGroup, our design team is working to create a museum on the site of the former Lumpkin’s Jail, which has a dark history as part of the slave trade from the 1830s through the Civil War. The project envisions healing and memorial landscapes that will preserve and interpret this authentic site, telling the story of the slave trade. Archaeological discovery was the first part of literally uncovering this story, unearthing the remains of the artifacts that illuminate the human history of this site. Restoration, renewal, and healing will then become key to the development of the built structure and landscape.
