University of Chicago LAB School

Project Location: Chicago, IL

Client: University of Chicago Laboratory Schools

Research for the Lab School began with Professor John Dewey in 1896. This nursery to high school program at the University of Chicago represents one of the first early education institutions that focused on learning by making/doing. The Lab School design for the Early Childhood Center and the new Arts Wing quadrangle is a model for creative thinking, highlighting natural systems in the landscape. The design demonstrates a focus on learning through ecological stewardship and free play. These exterior classrooms include a rain garden, native grove of trees, and mound system to convey water activity to engender a deeper understanding of the natural world in this urban setting.
