The Nexus at UNC Charlotte
Project Location: Charlotte, NC
Client: CATS Art in Transit Program
During the process of extending their public transit system on the LYNX Blue Line, the City of Charlotte put out a national call to artists. Mikyoung Kim Design was commissioned to create a sculpture at the UNC Charlotte station, as well as custom glass enclosure to passenger waiting areas. A series of enveloping stainless steel shadow screens transforms the plaza into a dynamic, shadow play environment. The undulations of the custom textured and perforated sculpture guide visitors to a central space defined by an inner core of light and shadow. Interactive lighting elements engage students and viewers, drawing them into the center of the plaza with a dynamic shadow pattern. The sculpture’s folds and bends encourage seating and engagement.
