Over the past year, MYK has been researching the impact of noise on our cognitive functioning and developing toolkits to design with noise in mind. The team conducted a sound walk to explore the public spaces of Boston to accumulate data regarding an individual’s experience sonically. Divided into two groups, the team ventured to four distinct destinations to conduct sound research, focusing on the unique aural environment of each location. A simple questionnaire guided our observations on noise levels and the overall sound experience. After gathering our data, we returned to the office, where we visualized our findings using a four-quadrant graph. Sticky notes marked with key sounds were placed throughout the chart, helping us clearly map and compare the acoustic characteristics of each area, revealing patterns and insights about the city’s soundscape.
